Chelsea Grin - Chelsea Grin (2008)

Chelsea Grin are a deathcore band. Most of you will probably just frown and skip this one because you assume it's going to suck judging by the genre. I can't disapprove of this, since everyone has an inner nazi elitist telling us not to overdo trying out new stuff and waking up with a condom in your ass one day, which is understandable, but let's not be so drastic. This EP has everything that you can either love or hate in deathcore. An abundance of breakdowns, inhaled grunts, high pitched screams, and that's about it. Unlike many other generic deathcore bands, these kids can actually write good songs, and I have to say these kids do have a lot of potential hidden underneath the fringes and eyeliner. I'm pretty sure Chelsea Grin's self titled EP is one of the best recent efforts in the genre.

Mortify - Abyssal (1996)

Polish death metal with a strong Floridian death influence. Doesn't the cover remind you of something? Legion, much?

Happy Face - Rage vs Wisdom (2008)

Rage vs Wisdom is the follow-up to the French band's kickass debut Le Tigre. They've noticeably changed, the lack of chuggz and inhales makes my inner deathwigger crave for more of the old stuff. The new album is more like downtuned, breakdown-ridden "beatdown" hardcore. Not bad, but not the same.

Purulent Jacuzzi - Stench Of The Drowned Carrion (2008)

Groovy Russian goregrind. Their style and sound is similar to that of Jig-Ai, and the music is almost as good. They also have a slam death vibe, mostly noticeable at the breakdowns.

Wayd - Ghostwalk (2007)

Technical-experimental-jazz-death. Similar to Atheist, Cynic, and the like.

Pavor - Furioso (2003)

Every tech death fan's wet dream. The bass is insane, bassplayers will most likely die of heart attack if you show them some Pavor. The album has no weak points though, it's not only the bass that will rip your current perception of technical death metal apart. Saying that it's perfect would be foolish, but it is pretty close.

Nadir - 2 albums

Origin: Hungary
Formed in: 2004
Encyclopaedia Metallum / Last.fm / Myspace

Tenacity (2005)
Quality: ~226 kbps MP3 / VBR V2
Download: Rapidshare

Those Who Bought The Rain (2008)
Quality: ~243 kbps MP3 / VBR V2
Download: Rapidshare

A highly underrated Hungarian band. They're worthy of being called old school, since they've been active since 1993; back then, they went by a different name. I'd describe their style as a mix of Bolt Thrower, Obituary and Crowbar. Pinpointing thir style isn't really possible, but it has lots of groovy midtempos, mosh parts, crushing sludge parts... I'm sure some pretentious asshole already came up with some inherently retarded sounding genres like "sludgecore" or "doomcore" to label them with, but we all know that arguing about genres is pointless. The only thing we can all surely say about Nadir is that they kick ass, and you should check them out if you haven't already.

Hate - Morphosis (2008)

I direct you to this old post: on the blog from a while ago. I've had that description/review set for this band when I meant to look into them when it was first posted. Year or more later I finally get around to it, and can say I was NOT let down.
Sadly, Hate, isn't where they deserve to be in the respects of the metal world. The sound on this album is said to be more melodic, and to some fans, this is a let down. I've also heard the term 'industrial' thrown in... but you can be your own judge.

The Faceless - Planetary Duality (2008)

"It's good. I used to listen to Akeldama a lot, I see nothing wrong with either albums. Akeldama shows some deathcore influence and is easier to listen to. Planetary duality is tech death, but more progressive, and less hardcore than Akeldama..."
That's what Astaroth/Wormpaste had to say about this back in November.
He's pretty much spot on, it's heavy on the technical and doesn't loose it's pace or direction.
It's got plenty of punch and each track actually does sound different.

VA - Lightnings Over The Burning Church (Moonblood Tribute) (2009)

"This is the first official underground MOONBLOOD tribute and it's done with the noble permission of Occulta Mors. Some of the cover hymns where recorded exclusively for this tribute and are not available anywhere else. This CD is limited to 500 copies and is dedicated to the real MOONBLOOD fans! Never to be re-released again!!!"
^ Not my words.

The production and quality you'll get from this is what is to be expected for a underground limited production release. Very lofi and underproduced, many could have been done live or on the fly one shot recordings. The songs here are classic and a majority of them are well done and hold justice to the originals.
Enjoy.

Czech band (now sadly split up due to financial reasons, sigh) T.O.O.H (The Obliteration of Humanity) who I have been after for ages. Not only is it a nightmare to find these anywhere on the internet, but it is also a mission to actually try and buy them due to limited releases, and Czech expermental death-grind doesnt generally have its own section in HMV!

Not given these a proper listen yet, so I will reserve my judgement for the time being, but they are highly rated and described as quirky progressive technical death/grind, so you're almost certain to find something a bit fresh here.

Enjoy

First album of this good deathgrind band.

Death // 4 Remasters // 2008 [updated]

Death_band.png

Death was an influential American death metal band founded in 1983 by guitarist and vocalist Chuck Schuldiner, considered a "pioneering death metal vocalist/guitarist". The band split up after Schuldiner's death in 2001.

Odious - Mirror Of Vibrations (2007)

Very good melodic black metal from Egypt.

Splitter - En Sorglig Historia (2006)

Kickass Swedish grind. You'll need a gasmask to listen to this, because it's that awesome.

Toxocara - The Great Rebellious (2008)

Dutch death metal. Like every other band from the Netherlands, their main theme is war and/or Satan. Their style resembles old school death metal with a techy modern touch and cleaner sound.

Introducing our new contrib: Warfare

A nudeath wigger from Hungary. He downloaded most of his music collection from here, back before I made him a contributor. Enjoys most of the terrible shit I do, plus black metal. Pesters me for music recommendations 24/7, because he has nothing better to do. He doesn't speak English very good, excuse him for that. He also has an upload speed way faster than mine, so we're about to put it to use.

Alright, now be nice to him.

Cervix - In The Red Night, A Roar... Slowly A Chant Began... (2008)

"Obscure Doom/Ambient sonic terrorism from Italy". That would be the description from the NFO of this release. 4 Tracks long, all except the 2 minute intro breaking the ten minute point. The sound here varies; at one point we have a very doom filled sound with maybe some black metal influence. That then progresses into a slow Black Sabbath like chug finishing with a experimental space like drone. That's just one track, the next is blistering feedback produced noise and chug, all still keeping an ambient and doom feel.

This comp is an exquisite example of fine Malaysian music. The mixture is various chaotic stuff that I'll leave the review from the NFO below to speak for this release. I suggest you grab it.

Third Arm Records must be one of the most hardworking labels in our local scene right now. Being committed on releasing local bands, this time Third Arm had compiled 8 of their current and future roster with each of the bands presented with 1 or 2 unreleased songs in a neat transparent-sticker-wrapped digipack.

Well known for championing the modern hardcore/grindcore scene, Third Arm had been putting out great releases from Infinite Delay, Blood On Wedding and Devillica. Technical, odd music arrangement and maniacs screaming their hearts out. You know the drill, a beautiful chaotic mess.

But no, they're not just all about that! You will be glad to know what kinda beast the emo violence forerunners Daighila had grown to be and to discover the underrated jazz-fused Lord Sunny Day.

Akta Angkasa are definitely one the bands with a notable space-rock track, but too bad that this is could be the last from them as they had broken up recently. Thats the same case for Devillica whom also followed suit. But I'm still not giving up hope and looking forward to be punished with more brutality from Nazark and Foliage. Could Foliage's synth-driven chaos be our answer to The Locust?

Power Metal, the genre everyone secretly enjoys, but won't admit. Iron Fire does what is expected of them and does it pretty alright. It's not Dragonfire, I'll tell you that. To most that would be a plus.

Gutted Out - Amongst The Rotted (2008)

Some "brutal gutteral death/grind" or what have you right hurr. It's slow, it chugs,it growls. It's golden.
Also, the band picture in the EM article is hysterical.

Umbrella - the misadventures of male figureskating

This act is a zebra of sorts, it mixes tech- with dashes of grind and a gentle sprinkling of hardcore. The band plays the various elements of the genres in such a pattern you can't for sure define their sound. Songs halve between hardcore tinged blastbeats to slow as fuck breakdown to spastic beat measures all over prolly some scrawny young white fellow trying to eat the microphone.
I enjoyed it.
or read this:

3) Umbrella was a fast and chaotic grindcore band from the Providence, Rhode Island featuring the drummer from As the Sun Sets. They released two splits, one with Every Kid Loves A Clown and another with Gigantic Brain. They also have a demo called “The Misadventures of Male Figure Skating”.
I couldn't even find an album cover or anything for these fellows.

urtikaria anal - Divine Depravation (2008)

First, the band name is spelled wrong in the id3 tags. For information on the band you can either look up the way its spelled via this post, OR, Urticaria Anal.

You have what I wanna call jam-band goregrind. It has all the elements of goregrind: blastbeats, gutterals, etc. The interesting parts of this album are the pace & emphasis on guitar riffs and chugging. It's got a groove to it. You can easily shake your ass to it.

Intestine Baalism - Ultimate Instinct (2008)

No time to review, gotta hurry, beer's getting warm, will write something later. Apparently it's something awesome, and a mix of the first two albums. I'll get back to this when I sober up.
If someone told me this album was made by a bunch of Swedes, I would've believed it. It's not though. Regardless of that, it sounds like genuine Swedish death with an extra load of melodic fills.
