Kataklysm - Prevail (2008)

Prevail doesn't bring much innovation to Kataklysm's arsenal. I personally prefer their early stuff, but the newer ones are also enjoyable. If you liked the recent Kataklysm albums, you'll probably like Prevail too. I'd say it's just the continuation of what they've been doing in the past few years, not amazing but a quite solid release nonetheless.

It's got groove, it's got 2 vocalists. It's oddly enjoyable!
A crunchy (great word choice) mix of metal and hardrock with a southern twinge. It's oddly refreshing in a sea of rather weak releases as of later. Enjoy

Opeth - Watershed (2008)

I wake up early with a double hangover, go to the bathroom to get some water, notice my PC and think about why I'm not in front of it yet. So I sit down for a few minutes just to check a few sites and I find this. I mean c'mon. Where the hell are all these new albums coming from?
Anyway, I'm seeing Moonfog tonight, and my enthusiasm is too great not to mention that I'm hyped up as fuck. If I survive the show, I'll give this one a good listen and write something proper....same goes for Deicide. Promise!

Update:
I guess 's like what you'd expect from an Opeth album, proggy stuff with a bunch of acoustic parts, and influences from most extreme metal genres. Since I'm not that big in Opeth, I'll let other people contribute with their reviews for Watershed. Send it to me if you have your own (preferably short) review, I'll add it to this post!

Deicide - Till Death Do Us Part (2008)

Yeah, it's finally here, only days before the official release. I haven't listened to it yet, but I'll write something proper once I do.

Update:
Deicide went a bit back in time with their new release. Fans of The Stench Of Redemption probably won't be quite satisfied with this...but if I think again, neither will the Legion fans. Till Death Do Us Apart is more similar to mid-era Deicide, but even less memorable. My expectations were high, but I have to say I'm quite disappointed. It has some highlights, but those are just less-shitty songs in comparison to the rest of the album. Altogether I'd say it's a repetitive, and a quite boring release.

Massacra - Enjoy The Violence (1991)

Massacra were one of the most prominent death-thrash bands in the early '90s, and their first 3 albums are regarded as classics. Enjoy The Violence has been well tested by time. With raw, yet balanced production, tremolo style riffs, and all aesthetics of death metal with a thrash edge taken to perfection, it's an excellent example for it's genre. It's furiosity is still very remarkable, and an great album for all standards.

Jazz influenced technical death from France. For me this album's one of the most enjoyable ones in the genre, because of the songs complex yet very memorable nature.

Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King (2008)

The 2 leaked songs off this album made a shitstorm that confused everyone. Why the drastic change? Are they selling out? No matter how we look at it, this album was anticipated by many. I don't know if it sucks or not, I haven't listened to it yet, but once I do, I'll write something proper. But that myspace song isn't very promising, and neither are the insults in their official guestbook.

Abacinate - Ruination (2008)

If I'd have to pinpoint this band's style as a single genre, I'd put them as deathcore. They have an array of influences that range from chugging hardcore to brutal and technical death, combined into a well-balanced mix that I'd describe as breakdown-ridden, part melodic - part brutal groovy death metal. Abacinate have plenty of diverse ideas, which make Ruination an original and solid album.

Annotations Of An Autopsy - Before The Throne Of Infection (2008)

Another album unexpectedly pops out from nothing. If this is anything like their EP from last year, expect some broodl emo fringe "slammin" deathcore. I haven't listened to this yet, but once I do, oh boy it'll be hilarious!

Update: this isn't quite as horrible as I expected. It shows some improvement, but it still has most things that made thier previous album shitty. Retarded breakdowns, excessive inhaling vocals, monotonous and uninspired song structures with a predictable "totally br00tal breakdown" and the line goes on...the new one sounds better and has some good ideas tho, and the riffs aren't brainlessly uninspired. A big step forward, but it still won't redeem them.

Emeth - Telesis (2008)

Emeth changed their style and sound on their most recent album in a similar manner to Prostitute Disfigurement. Telesis isn't brutal death like their previous efforts, but a death metal album with a modern sound. This change didn't make their music watery, but rather gave it some fresh blood. The sound is a bit more polished compared to the earlier albums. While not quite focusing either on brutality or technicality, Telesis is a solid and balanced album with memorable songs.

Arghoslent - Incorrigible Bigotry (2002)

Before I bought this album I was in quite a conflict. Should I really spend my money on this? Is it really worth it? Will I still think it was worth buying even years after purchasing it? I argued with myself, with half of my brain saying "I shouldn't give them my money! What about their ideology? Why do these people deserve my support?" and the other half still thinking "I must buy this! It's simply incredible! Regardless of their ideology, I could atleast show respect for them as musicians, and they do deserve that. And besides, I never have to aggree with whatever the bandmembers think just because I enjoy the music." This went on for a quite a while, several reasons telling me not to buy it and to buy it both arose.
-But I could just listen to the mp3s I already have!
-Yes, but I'd like to own this magnificent piece of art in a physichal manner, with the booklet and everything else, like it's meant to be.
-But what if the package doesn't arrive?
-I've done this quite a few times before. It's worth at least a try now.
-But why send them money I could otherwise spend on beer, and other useful things?
-I think sometimes I need good music rather than beer, and this would be one of those times.
Overwhelmed by the music, I finally decided to buy the CD. I mailed the band and ordered it via mail. At first glance they seemed to be assholes, but actually they turned out to be quite nice people. The CD arrived in a shattered case, but I got what I wanted. I was really satisfied with my decision when I could finally hold the CD in my hands. So was it worth it? - one might ask. It sure was, and the two biggest reasons I'm saying it are: because it's an absolutely great album that still amazes me with every listen; and because by now it is sold out. So what makes this album so amazing? I'll move on to the actual review.
Incorrigible Bigotry has several things many bands lack. Originality is one of these. Catchy leads, creative riffs pop out in unexpected parts of the songs, keeping the album constantly interesting to listen to. Both musical performance and songwriting are excellent. Every song has it's own battle-torn face, there's no dull repetitiveness here. They flow perfectly, sound incredibly melodic but without becoming flowery or weak. The album's topic deals with history, war, heroism, victory and defeat. Every minute of these battle-hymns reflect a world where one is not raised to live in peace, but to give his life in battle. Incorrigible Bigotry's glorious chants will raise your spirit, regardless of your point of view on the ideology, topic, or whatever that may seem unappealing. It's simply overwhelming music, not giving this album a listen is doing a mistake.

IWRESTLEDABEARONCE - IWRESTLEDABEARONCE (2007)

A new EP by a pretty original band. It isn't easy to categorize them, but I'd describe their style as deathcore interchanging with all sorts of dope whack bullshit. They're kinda like Arsonists Get All The Girls, but even more random and unpredictable. The other main musical influences are electronica and clean female vocals. This girl's just insane, she screams and growls, then quickly changes to beautiful clean singing. Get this if you want some unpredictable and hilarious music that's always fun listening to.

Amazing deathgrind with immense power. Not only do they blast away in RGTE fashion, leaving untrained ears full of faeces, pus, and chunky vomit with a cloudy brownish tone, but also pulverize with a porngrind-influenced groove. Pummeling hymns of groove-grind will bring about headbanging induced euphoria with the first note. Vocalist Joost Silvrants growls like a beast, the drums pound and blast, the guitars sound rough and sturdy, yet clean enough for the riffs to be distinguishable. Long story put short, these Dutch freaks play groovy, humorous, violent deathgrind with a style of their own, and do it so that you'll be addicted to eating clit for the rest of your life.
