SikTh is a progressive metal/technical metal band from Watford, London. They are currently signed to independent record label, Bieler Bros. Records. SikTh formed in March 2000. Their music has been under the scope of many music magazines such as Kerrang and Metal Hammer, and is a favourite of BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs. Their style of music, although obviously being extreme music, is beyond classification. It is self-described as 'noisecore', and is often labeled as 'weirdcore'.

Oh yeah, it's about time. Here's a killer reissue of Necrophagist's out of print 1999 debut - remixed and tweaked with new drum programming, an all new layout, and two bonus tracks from the 1995 demo. I didn't first hear this record until around two or three years ago, and despite being told great things about it I was hesitant going in because it's rare for a one-man show to be all that impressive. Necrophagist mastermind Muhammed Suicmez handled pretty much everything on this entire CD sans a few additional bass tracks laid down by Jochen Bittmann, and let me just say that if you heard this blindly with no background information you'd never fucking guess that it wasn't a full band, and you probably wouldn't even think you were hearing programmed drums, because these fuckers sound significantly better than most triggered sets do.

Now this is heavy... When you first listen to it, you'll probably feel like your forehead was smashed with a pneumatic drill. But that's just kewl. Of course there are melodies here and there, but the most important thing is, that it's brutal. Vocals are similar to other deathcore bands', deep guttural growling, and sometimes pig-squealing-like breeeeee. But here, the growling vocals are even deeper, like a bullfrog was doing it, and they're damn fast, and the breeee is faster too, and here and there there are vocals between the two kinds, and those are sometimes more dechiperable. I think there isn't even one weak song on this album. Nemesis is a mighty song, and it's so heavy and fast... like a train running over you repeatedly. Identisick is also great, mighty solos, everything is in the right place. Mourning Affliction is more melodic, and also very good, Ransack The Soul is a very fast song, it just crushes your skull, Iscarioth is also a more melodic one, whick slows down and gets even better and in every song, every little part is in the right place... In some songs, there are effects that you wouldn't even expect, like the latin american drums appearing in Sex-Addicted for a few seconds... Everything's just great. You must get this.

Edge Of Sanity - Crimson (1996)
Edge Of Sanity is a swedish death metal/melodic death band, who... umm... do their job very well. Only Dan Swanö is left in the band, and he does everyhing now, but on this album, the whole band is there. This song is exactly 40 minutes long (yeah, the whole album is one song) so you probably don't see things like this every day. Get it if you like things like that, I think it's very nice.

Meshuggah - Psystik Testbild (1989)
Meshuggah are the masters of math-metal. Well, it's probably not very easy to listen for everyone, but I still think it's great. This is their first EP, and was released in only 1000 copies (although they were later reissued on the "Rare Trax" album) so you should get this if you're a fan of math-metal and things like that.

Nevermore - Dead Heart In a Dead World (2000)
This album of Nevermore combines the complex guitar riff arrangements of Arch Enemy along with the technicality of bands like Fear Factory and Soilwork. Although unlike these bands, Nevermore decided to incorporate plenty of acoustic passages as well, which I highly appreciate. The lead vocalist's has an awesome heavy metal voice, it's clean and highly melodic yet at the same time morbid and painful (in a good way), with a continuous David Bowie-ish flare. The basic guitar riffs behind each song are fast and brutal, yet not the hardest to play at times, but no matter, because the dark and futuristicly technical atmosphere created with keyboards and the vocals more then make up for it.

Detente - Recognize No Authority (1986)
A true cult band in history, Detente may be best known for the vocal duties been handled by Dawn Crosby who later appeared in Fear Of God in the nineties. Detente's only release Recognize No Authority is a surprisingly solid, strong album in its own right. It features some of the most frantic speed/thrash metal with some punkish touches, a style strongly characterized by the heavy, screaming guitars and the totally unrestrained vocals by Dawn Crosby who practically screams her lungs out on tracks like Holy War and Shattered Illusions. It's not exactly a match for Holy Moses, of course, but there's no denying that her fierce delivery is possibly the most important single factor contributing to the total intensity of this album and effectively puts many of the less inclined male vocalists to shame. Not that the songs wouldn't have a fair share of solid riffs already, but even the less stand-out tracks are helped immensely by Crosby's devoted performance. With a bit raw but appropriate production, this album appears like a healthy dose of fresh air on your face.

Tankard - Chemical Invasion (1987)
Chemical Invasion continued directly in Tankard's traditional style of easy-going thrash metal which was established on Zombie Attack. From the first few notes you know what to expect, the only exception from the formula being the instrumental For A Thousand Beers (of course). Despite the somewhat formulaic music Tankard put out, one got to sort of admire the accuracy and speed at which the band play through all their mosh pieces. However, in the end most tracks sound quite the same which applies to the whole album as well. In this sense Chemical Invasion is just another typical Tankard album.

[1986] Sentinel Beast - Depths Of Death
Sentinel Beast's only release Depths Of Death provides an interesting dose of old speed metal from the mid-eighties. Being one of the few bands in the genre with a female vocalist, their sound is a little more original and distinctive than in your average band. Sentinel Beast's musical style is something in the vein of the old Nasty Savage, complete with a dark sound where Debbie Gunn's husky voice fits very well. The songs are quite old-fashioned in a good way, the track Sentinel Beast being one of the better examples of the band's dynamic style. There's something inevitably dated in the music of Depths Of Death but like stated, the result got some genuine appeal of its own.

Throes of Dawn is a dark metal band from Finland, formed in 1994 by Henri Koivula (vocals) and Jani Heinola (synth). Three other members soon joined the band after their previous band ceased to exist. Throes of Dawn plays emotional dark metal, combining synths and guitars in a unique way. The music is not fast, nor aggressive, rather mid-paced and heavy, with screaming vocals and occasional clean vocals. The synths play an important role by bringing lots of atmosphere and depth into the music. Deicide - The Stench Of Redemption (666) EP (2006)
This EP is really great, a must for every fan of Death Metal! Well, the file isn't very big, so you sure won't lose anything :) There are 2 songs, both are really great. Both are fast, and have insane solos that are melodic, and... very good to listen. :) I downloaded it 2 or 3 days ago I think, and I listen to them several times a day, they're so mighty. (I'm listening to the EP right now btw :) ) The middle part solo in Homage For Satan is just... mindblowing. And so is the other one. The second song is also just a... masterpiece. Sometimes fast or pounding and heavy, sometimes melodic, or sometimes both. Dammit, i just don't wanna say anything more, just download it. I'm sure gonna buy this CD as soon as I can!

Hi, I'm Astaroth, the new blog "owner" :)
I'm quite inexperienced in posting on blogs, (I haven't done anything like this before) but I don't think there would be problems with that. OK, maybe one... the problem is that I don't have very much time, and I can't really upload because of my crappy net, (so I'll probably take links from other places) so I can seldom post on the blog, but I'll try to do everything I can.
So things about me: I live in Serbia. My favourite genre of metal is mostly death metal, but I'm into anything metal. Misery Index - Discordia (2006)
Their style of death metal is old school with a few breakdowns thrown in and a hardcore punk influence, especially in the angry, politically charged lyrics. The tempos are mostly fast, but they dial it back a little on the title track, adding some melody without losing any of the intensity. The album is only 33 minutes long, but Misery Index packs quite a wallop into that short amount of time.

Paradise Lost - Gothic (1991)
'Gothic' is one of the best albums ever. It is a big influence of the whole gothic doom metal scene and on most doom bands nowadays. Every song on it is great, each one having an own atmosphere, though they're all very melodic and melancholic. The only negative thing I can think of is that 'Gothic' isn't about twice as long. So everyone who doesn't know this album should be shot. Well, at least be kicked. Hard.
